Two VOO Sports cricket bats

How to Choose the Right Cricket Bat for You

The right bat makes you feel quicker, hit cleaner and last longer at the crease. The wrong one feels heavy, slows your hands and costs you runs. Here is how to pick the bat that suits you, in six simple steps.

1. Start with the right size

A bat that is too big or too small ruins your timing. The quick test: stand with the bat upright in front of you, toe resting on the ground. The top of the handle should reach about the top of your thigh (the waist for taller players). If you are choosing for a growing child, pick the size they fit today, not one to “grow into”.

  • Short Handle (SH): the standard adult bat, roughly for players up to about 5 ft 8 in.
  • Long Handle (LH): for taller players, with extra reach on the handle.
  • Harrow and junior sizes: for teenagers and kids. Go by height, and ask us if you are unsure.

2. English willow or Kashmir willow?

This is the biggest choice, and it decides price and performance.

English willow Kashmir willow
Best for Serious and club cricket, hard leather ball Beginners, practice, tape-ball and casual play
Feel Soft, lively, big sweet spot Firmer, more durable
Weight Lighter for its size Slightly heavier
Price Higher Budget friendly
Our tip: playing regular hard-ball cricket? Go English willow. Just starting out, or playing tape-ball with friends? Kashmir willow gives great value.

3. Check the weight and pick-up

Most adult bats weigh between 2 lb 6 oz and 3 lb. Heavier bats give more power but slow your hands. Lighter bats are quicker through the shot. Pick up the bat and play a few shadow drives. If your wrists tire after a few swings, it is too heavy for you.

4. Look at the grains

Straight, evenly spaced grains show healthy, well-seasoned willow. More grains usually mean softer, better performing wood, but a bat with fewer grains can still play very well. Do not pay extra for looks alone. Pay for the wood.

5. Choose the profile and sweet spot

  • Low sweet spot: suits players who like the ball on the bat, and slower pitches.
  • Mid sweet spot: an all-round choice for most players.
  • High sweet spot: for those who play off the front foot and on bouncy pitches.

6. Set your budget and care for the bat

A good bat is an investment. Once you have it, apply protective face tape, use an anti-scuff sheet, knock the bat in with a mallet before match use, and store it away from damp and heat. Looked after, a bat can last for years.
